The Film Festival Max Ophüls Preis is dedicated to the presentation and promotion of up-and-coming German-language newcomer films.
By concentrating exclusively on works by upcoming talents from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg, it is regarded as the most important film festival for new talent in the German-speaking territories. The cinema film as an audiovisual artistic narrative form is the focus of the festival. Due to its name, the film festival traditionally feel obliged not only to tie in with domestic film history but especially to deal with politically and socially relevant topics. Max Ophüls (1902-1957), who gave the festival its name and grew up in a liberal, upper middle-class Jewish family in Saarbrücken, is considered one of the great European film directors of the 20th century.
