Selecting films from the list presented to me by T-port was not a simple task. Not because I did not find good films, quite the contrary. This selection again proved that there is an immense pool of skill, ideas and vision among mostly young people who dedicate their enthusiasm and time to film making. My task was to select 10-15 films, and I had no difficulties using my maximum number as there were definitely more than 15 films that I found interesting and well made. As curator working with short films I feel, still after more than 20 years, privileged that I am given an opportunity to see all these short films.
This selection is just one selection from the pool presented, revealing my taste and idiosyncrasies, nothing else. The idea of Lighthouse selection having two curators selecting films from the same pool is a splendid idea as it gives two different approaches how to appreciate the diversity of the world of short films.
Jukka-Pekka Laakso is the festival director of Tampere Film Festival since 2002. As a festival director he shares the responsibility to strategic planning and programming with a co-director. He has been a member of more than 60 juries in film festivals including Edinburgh Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Festival du Noveau Cinema in Montreal, Hanoi Film Festival and Morelia Film Festival in Mexico.
Jukka-Pekka Laakso acts also as the executive director for Pirkanmaa Film Centre, a local film centre in Tampere. The film centre is a non-profit organisation that runs an art-house cinema, distributes films in Finland and works extensively with media education.
Jukka-Pekka Laakso was for 10 years member of the Council of Cinema of Finland (part of the Arts council) and as the chairman for 6 years also member of the Arts Council. He is also a member of the European Film Academy.
