Nick Blake is a writer/director from London, England and Kafkas is his first narrative short film. He cut his teeth assisting on feature films for Richard Curtis, Kevin MacDonald and Ridley Scott, before directing in the commercials world. He has worked for brands such as Guinness, Hewlett Packard, John Lewis, FedEx, Pepsi and many more.
I discovered Marianne Wiggins’s out-of-print short story “Kafkas” in a dusty old literary magazine from 1987. It was like finding a rare fossil in the sand. It seemed natural for adaptation as a short film which couples humour with dark anxiety. The character, Fran, is lost. Trapped in a disappointing existence, she devises a weird means of escape. As bizarre as Fran’s goal is, however, the character had to be completely believable and empathetic. I cast the wonderful Patsy Ferran who stepped into the role with complete dedication and focus and she delivers a compelling performance. We are not left questioning Fran’s choices, but rather contemplating the plight of a lonely soul.
