The story that became Sylvain’s Hunt was appealing as simultaneously familiar and foreign. Issues between children and parents are well known, issues between sons and fathers are all but universal. Even if aspects of a story are different, movies allow access to feelings of shared experience. Using the aesthetics that come with traditional practical effects to enhance the uncanny feelings of the more surreal elements, came from the desire to make a shared human experience accessible in a different way. The goal was to use surreal effects to isolate human affect. I don’t necessarily expect Sylvain’s Hunt to be anyone’s ultimate catharsis but I do hope it can let someone know they are in good company.
