Syllas Tzoumerkas was born in 1978 in Thessaloniki. He grew up in Thessaloniki, Kilkis and the island of Nissyros. He directed the feature films Homeland (Venice Critics’ Week 2010), A Blast (Locarno International Competition 2014), The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea (Berlinale Panorama 2019) and The City and the City (co-direction with Christos Passalis, Berlinale Encounters Competition 2022). His films participated in several international film festivals around the world (Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, BFI London, New Directors New Films, American Film Institute, Jeonju, BiFAN, Fantasia, New Horizons, Hong-Kong, etc.), and got released in theatres and streaming platforms in many countries. He co-wrote the scripts of Argyris Papadimitropoulos Suntan (Rotterdam, SXSW 2016) and Ahmad Ghossein’s All This Victory (Venice Critics’ Week 2019). As a theatre director and in multi-platform works he collaborated with Onassis Stegi, the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Greek National Opera, Thessaloniki IFF, and others. As a curator, he co-curated ‘Motherland, I See You – The 20th Century of Greek Cinema’, the restoration program and moving festival of the Hellenic Film Academy (2021-2), the retrospective ‘Zeta, Floretta, Niki’ (Onassis Stegi, Hellenic Film Academy, 2022), and the experimental festival ‘Panigíri – Live Cinema, The Working Class, Sirens’ (2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture).
