Mathieu Volpe (Rome, 1990), raised by a Belgian mother and an Italian father in Bari, moved to Belgium in 2009 to study filmmaking. His short films have screened at global festivals including Locarno, Torino, Dok Leipzig, and Fipadoc. "An Italian Youth," his debut documentary, was filmed in Italy and Burkina Faso and premiered at Festival dei Popoli in 2022. In tandem, he's crafting "Red Gold," his inaugural fictional work, produced by the Dardenne brothers. "Eldorado" is his first fiction short.
Mathieu is working on Red Gold, his first fictional feature film, produced by Delphine Tomson and the Dardenne brothers. The film follows Regina (45), originally from Cameroon, who arrives at the "Ghetto," a shantytown in southern Italy where hundreds of migrant workers are exploited for the tomato harvest. It was there, just a few months earlier, that she lost track of her son Isaac (24), who had come to Italy on a scholarship to study law. Finding her son—even at the risk of discovering he is dead—is the only way for Regina to silence her deep and constant guilt. The shooting is planned for September 2025.
