Directors Note regarding the film "In the Rough" My mother grew up in Soviet-occupied Lithuania, my father near a western German banking metropolis. I was raised in a small German town and already at an early age there was a lot of emphasis on grades, abstract job prospects and careers. A moment ago I was just a child and the older I got, the more these abstract expectations tugged at me from all sides. For me, it was a state in which I felt understood by no one, not even by myself. During this time, I met a fisherman on a family holiday in Lithuania. He owned a boat and fished every day. I immediately understood his mission in life and for me he seemed free and independent. Soon I painfully realised that the fisherman was far from being as free and self-determined as I thought. He repressed the fact that everything around him was changing, stubbornly clung to his old habits and fell into alcoholism. For the first time, I consciously left idols behind and felt, just like our protagonist Linus, that I should find my own way.
