My practice stems from researching methods of using film in order to successfully engage and promote ecological thought. With a focus on material and form, I use a variety of methods to record my surroundings and highlight sensorial and emotional experiences. Rejecting the sublime image of nature, distorted and textural documentation reveal unseen connections in the landscape. I unapologetically defend the quirks of handmade animation and guerilla-style shoots as it creates intimacy between subject and audience through its imperfections. Blending research and imagination, I celebrate and caution audiences of the subjectivity of film by embracing phenomenological perspectives over objective information. I focus increasingly on human-nature relationships in the urban landscape. Nature is often restricted to a specific use or place as a means to reintroduce beauty and benefit the local population. However, Nature is no one thing, as nature simply is. To accept human life as natural, even within the confines of the city, releases individuals from the fabricated anthropocentric reality. I explore this through moving image as a counter form of nature documentary. While they typically highlight grand spectacles, my work celebrates the mundane, intimate encounters people experience everyday. I continue to explore these themes and expand the definition of documentary not only through film but installation and print.

Charlie Black (she/her) is a moving image artist from the U.K, working as a freelancer and technician. Having graduated with a First Class honours MA in Creative Film Production in Berlin, 2024, she jumped into her premiere for her short MA experimental film 'Christmas Afterparty' as part of Gijon’s International Festival’s Official Selection in 2024. She continues to present her films at festivals across Europe, screening her final MA film 'Losing Touch' at Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival in Scotland 2025 and selected for the Experimental Competition at In the Palace Short Film Festival, Bulgaria. She works with image and sound to both document and play with her surroundings, creating sensory and material driven collages. Blending research and imagination, she celebrates the subjectivity of film and highlights the emotional experience of her story or subject. With a variety of materials and methods in each of her works, Charlie presents many perspectives, unapologetically defending the quirks that come with handmade animation and guerilla-style shoots. Charlie’s practice is steered by an interest in her local ecology. She explores her landscape and discovers daily encounters between people and the rest of nature, as a means to process and strengthen these relationships. Her most recent films look at this context in the urban landscape. Currently based in Manchester, she continues to exhibit regionally and facilitates art workshops while working as a Technician for Animation and Graphics at Manchester School of Art.
