The IAD is based in Belgium, belongs to the Artistic Postsecondary Educational Programme (Domain of the Performing Arts, Media and Communication Techniques) and delivers diplomas that are homologated by the State, as the school is part of the free and government funded educational system of the Wallonia – Brussels Federation, Belgium. The IAD (www.iad-arts.be) has been founded in 1959 and trains to the jobs of film, television, radio, multimedia and Performing Arts. The IAD forms students to become professional artists who combine artistic creativity, technical skill and communication ability. Since its creation, the IAD has trained more than 2000 people to the professions associated with cinema, television, radio, multimedia and theatre. The school has around 500 students each year.

The IAD includes 6 departments:

3 Master’s degrees: one in Cinema (Fiction and Documentary), one in Radio-Television-Multimedia (with the recently created Master in Radio Directing) and one in Performing Arts.

4 Bachelor’s degrees: Camera and Lighting / Sound / Editing and continuity / Multimedia and computer graphics 1 complementary degree allowing to teach in the secondary education upper level or in Art Schools 4 Certificates: Audio-visual Production, living arts Production, Live music Production and Artists’ Management and Radio Animation.

The aim of the IAD is to train professional artists combining creativity, artistic sensibility, technical know-how and communication skills. To reach this goal, the IAD privileges a one-to-one educational approach. This one-to-one educational approach of the IAD is based on two fundamental principles: All students receive individual tutorship; All students have regular access and usage of the materials and tools necessary to learn and acquire a practical knowledge of their future job and this from the very first year of their studies. IAD’s educational project is based on three fundamental principles:

The acquisition, the practice and the proper command of the knowledge and of the know-how are based on the production of a project: throughout their studies, students will be proactive learners putting their newly acquired knowledge into practice through different projects; The privileged working and learning method is teamwork. Students from different departments work in small teams on a collaborative project.

Creativity is the core of the educational project and the heart of our students’ training. In order to achieve its objective of educating professional artists, the IAD privileges a tutorship in line with the professional sector of the Performing Arts and Media and Communication Techniques both for the creative/artistic and technico-technological courses. Two thirds of IAD teachers have part-time assignments because they are also professional people working in the audiovisual and entertainment business.

In their final year, Master’s students in Cinema and Radio-Television-Multimedia get the opportunity to direct their own film/project, surrounded by a whole team made up of students from other sections and framed by teachers.
