Bio: José Camargo (he/him) was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1994 and currently holds both Colombian and Canadian citizenships. At the age of 15, he moved to Toronto, Canada, where he made his first short films for the Etobicoke School of the Arts High School film program, some of which were presented in the Toronto International Film Festival's Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase. He went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, majoring in philosophy and psychology. He then worked as a consultant in psychosocial research and gender and social inclusion for Cuso International. He has made several videos for both Cuso International and Save the Children Canada. Since childhood, he has dreamed of becoming a film director. Today, he is interested in exploring philosophical and psychological themes in cinema and making films that invite the audience to reflect on free will, existentialism and the metaphysical. In 2020, he began his master's degree in directing at the Vienna Film Academy under the supervision of Michael Haneke. “Interchange” was a medium-length short film in the framework of this program, which he directed, wrote and acted in, which was shot in both Toronto, Canada and Vienna, Austria and which also stars Karl Markovics, Beatriz Pizano and Dominik Dos-Reis. His next short is called “Tras la Niebla” (Through the Fog) and is currently in post-production. He graduated Filmakademie Wien in March 2024 under Barbara Albert. His written thesis was called: “Are the means of fictional cinema able to portray the myths of the indigenous population of Cauca, Colombia in the documentary film “'Our Voice of the Earth, Memory and the Future” by Marta Rodríguez and Jorge Silva?” This work was supervised by Professor Claudia Walkensteiner-Preschl.
