Born in São Paulo in 1994, João Pedro Prado is pursuing a master's degree in directing at Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, for which he received a scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. He previously graduated in Philosophy and Film Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin and studied Audiovisual Media at the University of São Paulo. Between 2018 and 2021, he was a student researcher on the Cinepoetics project “Affective Rhetorics of the Audiovisual”, which investigated emotionalizing strategies in film and television through computer-assisted film analysis. His short documentary Panama, One-Way about a Corona-denying influencer was screened at several festivals in Germany, France and Switzerland over the course of 2022 and aired on national television. Ash Wednesday is his fiction film debut. He is currently shooting his graduation film Spaltung, a documentary feature on German nuclear energy discourse in co-production with ZDF Das Kleine Fernsehspiel.
