After 20 years of making documentaries, I went back to school to pursue an MFA in production with a focus on narrative work, and 'Promise Me' is the result. The film is produced by Fonna Seidu. I am a co-founder of OYA Media Group. OYA is a powerful African goddess and the namesake of a woman-led, award-winning production company in Toronto.  We bring a genuine Black Canadian perspective to media platforms, from film and TV to virtual reality. We share socially relevant and life-changing stories that celebrate Black experiences. Our emerging filmmaker programs, give us unparalleled access to new talent and fresh ideas. We believe that we are pushing forth a new landscape of cinema.

Bio: Founding partner of Oya Media Group, Alison Duke aka “Golde” is known for dynamic storytelling that illuminates Black Canadian history and documents the present, while captivating audiences of all ages. Recently, Duke's Promise Me won two 2021 Yorkton Film Festival's Golden Sheaf for Best Director Fiction and Best Scripted. She was a supervising producer and story editor on Being Black in Toronto which won a 2021 Canadian Screen award-winning for Best Direction in a documentary series. In 2019, she produced and co-wrote 'Mr. Jane and Finch', a CBC POV Documentary which won two 2020 Canadian Screen Awards: the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary and Best Writing for a Documentary. At the same time, she also directed 'Cool Black North', a two-hour TV documentary special for City TV which is currently touring American film festivals. Her short narrative debut, 'Promise Me' (‘20) inspired by her social justice documentary, 'The Woman I Have Become' (‘08) is a riveting story about the bond between a mother and daughter. It has received other festival honors including the Winston M. Moxam Award for Best Canadian Short at the AfroPrairie film festival, Best Short at the Columbus Black International film festival, and Standout Writing at the Reelworld film festival.  Alison recently directed the short monodrama,  'The Prescription' (2021) written by Lisa Codrington and featuring Akosua Amo-Adem for Obsidian Theatres 21 Black Futures short series streaming on CBC Gem.
