Working in a mythopoetic language and using symbolism, I explore social issues, collective memory, and the intersections of Ukrainian identity, history, and culture. I view filmmaking as a medium where various arts converge—bringing together performance, dance, theatricality, and poetry.

Marichka Lukianchuk (b. 1997, Zhytomyr, Ukraine) is a filmmaker and artist based in Berlin. She studied Interdisciplinary Arts at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands), graduating in 2021 with the short film Past Future Mountain, shot in the Carpathians in collaboration with the Hutsul community. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she joined the Harun Farocki Institut residency in Berlin (2022–23), where she created Between Before and After, a mid-length film on the psychological and cultural impact of war. Her most recent work, “97”, is a performative short film reflecting on the trauma of witnessing death. She is currently developing several projects: NOVYNA, a short film co-directed with Anna Mrachkovska about a peasant facing the decision to kill his daughters during famine, and Birds Sing Underwater, a feature set during the Holodomor. Lukianchuk writes, directs, and edits her films, which she presents across both film and art contexts. Her work unites cinema with elements of performance, theatre, and poetry. Through a mythopoetic language, she explores social issues, collective memory, and Ukrainian history and culture, seeking to transform archetypal and historical narratives into contemporary forms.
