Maria Mørkrid (1992), a director and writer based in Berlin since 2018, has a blend of Norwegian and Russian heritage. Her upbringing spanned Oslo, New York City, and Moscow, fostering a diverse artistic perspective. Maria's early experiences in theater led her to direct and write five plays, as she co-founded her brainchild, the theater company Teater Playroom at age 17. She transitioned into acting, appearing in various television shows, films, and commercials until 2021. In 2021, Maria graduated from MET Film School with her short film 'Imitation', which received recognition at international festivals, including OUGA COTE COURT in Burkina Faso and winning Best Screenplay and Best Actress at the ASTI INTERNATION FILM FESTIVAL in 2023. Her second short film, 'Jonte', received nominations and awards, including a nomination for Best Short Film at Berlin's second biggest festival ACHTUNG BERLIN, as well as the Jury Prize at SHORTCUTZ Berlin edition 2023. While Maria primarily focuses on fiction, she has also explored documentary filmmaking. Her upcoming documentary highlights the challenges faced by a Ukrainian woman in Berlin amidst the onset of war. In her latest project, 'Prey', Maria delves into the complexities of sexual harassment, following the journey of a perpetrator turned victim. Selected for the Talent Connexion program at CLERMONT FERRAND in 2024, 'Prey' is set to release in the spring. With this film, she searches for her voice and explores topics such as gender, sexuality and alienation. She is currently in development for her debut feature film, an Indian-German co-production, and apart from this, she is always open to new stories and collaborations.
