Julia Granat Uotila

My work explores themes of absence, memory, and the subtle forces that shape our perception of reality. I am drawn to stories where what is missing is just as significant as what is present—whether through physical absence, forgotten histories, or emotional voids. Using a blend of observation and abstraction, I seek to depict the intangible.

Born in 1990, Julia Granat Uotila holds a Master’s degree in Social Psychology from the University of Helsinki (2018) and is currently completing her second Master’s in Documentary Filmmaking at Tel Aviv University (expected 2025). With a background in social sciences and performing arts—both on stage and on camera—she transitioned to working behind the lens in 2017 as part of a short film collective in Helsinki. In 2019, she produced, wrote, and directed a successful campaign video for Finnish youth leader Liban Sheikh. The campaign contributed to his election as President of the Left Youth of Finland and his subsequent selection for The Obama Foundation program. That same year, while working at the Krakow Film Festival, Granat Uotila met legendary filmmaker and producer Jörn Donner, who briefly mentored her before his health declined. In 2023, she created Soft Paradox, a video installation piece featured in an arts festival in Eastern Finland.
