James Prineas was born in Sydney in 1964 to parents of Kytherian, Swedish and English decent. After finishing high school in Sydney he travelled to Greece and studied the language as well as working and travelling there for two years. Much of this time was spent on the island of Kythera documenting the island in photographs and stories. The following 4 years were spent working and studying in Greece, Germany, the United States, before finally settling in Berlin where he now lives with his Danish wife and two sons. He has travelled to Kythera almost every year since 1984. In 1996 he published his collection of short stories and photographs "A Village on Kythera" to accompany his photographic exhibition which was displayed at the Bondi Pavilion Gallery and also in Nuremberg in Germany. In 1996 James Prineas founded Designerdock, a recruitment agency for the design, advertising and multimedia industries, which now has offices in Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich. Through this venture he has contacts to the premier designers and programmers in the industry. He is also actively involved in the conceptual design of websites. In 1999 he conceived a cultural archive system for Kythera and it was launched as Kythera-Family.net in 2003. The site provides a free and user friendly community platform for all Kytherians everywhere in the world to share their old photographs and letters and other Kytherian material. At the time of writing there were over 20 000 entries which had been submitted to the site. In the following years James started a variety of business including Big Fat Greek Spinach Pies and an arts representation system (Artistdock). In 2016 he began making films and his first film, Kythera mon Amour, received various awards and short version of it - The Beekeepers - was a finalist at the 2017 Sydney Tropfest. It was followed by Winter on Kythera and, in 2020, An Island named Desire. Various short films were also produced and achieved success at various Festivals, with short film extracts from Winter on Kythera making it into the Cannes Short Film Corner as part of the festival there in 2018. In 2021 he shot Once Upon a Time on Kythera and it will be premiered in Australia in August 2022.
