CAN MERDAN DOĞAN Director and screenwriter Can Merdan Doğan graduated from the Theatre Department of Ankara University and received his Master’s degree from the Cinema and Television Department of Kadir Has University. In 2013, Doğan was nominated for “Playwright of the Year” at the Journal of Theater Awards for his play “I Played Games with My Dad When I Was a Kid”, which won the Afife Award for Best Actress in a Musical Comedy. His first feature film, “Arabesque Underground” (2014), on which he worked as a screenwriter and assistant director, premiered at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival and won five other awards in Turkey. His short film “Stiletto: A Pink Family Tragedy” (2021) premiered in the Short Film Competition of the 65th BFI London Film Festival and won the Best International Short Film at the Dublin International Film Festival. The film has screened at over 20 film festivals worldwide, including the Netherlands, Germany and South Korea. It was also broadcast on Canal+ France in 2022. He has recently completed his second short film, “The Longest Night”, which will premiere in 2024. He is currently pursuing his PhD at the Department of Media, Theatre and Popular Culture at the University of Hildesheim, while working on his debut film ‘Backstage’. His academic interests and aesthetic explorations center around queer and hybrid forms of storytelling.
