Orla is a cocktail of live-action footage, animation, and music. It’s made for young audiences and aims to break down stereotypes rooted in unequal systems and oppression. The story of the main female character is inspired by contemporary ecological and feminist perspectives and centers on acceptance, connection, and love between people. I wanted to make a film that I would feel comfortable showing to my own kids – one that might help them be less afraid of being critical. Of course, that makes me, as a parent, the first target. But learning how to spot problems in systems, and how to talk about them together, feels essential to me—for healthy relationships, whether in a family or in society as a whole. Orla draws on the tradition of Czech fairy tales from the 1970s and 1980s. I wanted to build on this tradition and translate it into a more contemporary language. The main heroine wears braces and is not afraid; her loverboy has tattoos and changes his forms. The danger and evil they face are still around us today—they just have to keep finding new ways to deal with them.

Marie Lukáčová is a visual artist and film director. Her films transform symbols borrowed from politics, mythology, and science, moving across various narratives while addressing questions of an uncertain future. In recent years, she has showcased her work both internationally (Undercurrent Gallery, New York, US) and domestically (National Gallery Prague and Gallery Prague, CZ). She was a finalist for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2019, and her film Moréna Rex (2019) won an award in the experimental film category at the Jihlava IDFF. She received an honorable mention for Milena’s Song (2019) at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival. Her latest film, Pole Žin (2020), was presented at both the Oberhausen Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. Lukáčová is currently a lecturer at the Center for Audiovisual Studies at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU), and since 2017, she has been teaching multimedia strategies at the ARCUS high school.
