Director's statement As a director, I am really interested in the role of Finnish women that I have observed and experienced throughout my life. We have a terrible culture of intimate violence, silence and enduring — a stoic way of dealing with feelings and repressing “difficult” emotions, that is passed on through time. I wanted to tell a story that focuses on two women of different generations and their difficulty to face each other as vulnerable and worthy. The tension between them builds not from difference but from mirroring and recognition. For me the world is magical and mundane at the same time, and amidst all the horror I want to find moments of hope and freedom.

Helmi Donner (b. 1998, Helsinki) studies directing at Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Department of Film, Television and Scenography. As a filmmaker Helmi is interested in twisted intimate relationships and the roles people play in order to survive. They are fascinated with the interplay of past and present, and take pride in being an archive geek. Along with film studies, they have worked with sourcing archive material for several feature films. The Lightning rod is their graduation work.
