I am interested in the experience of Sephardic women of Norht African in Israel, expecially those of my mother's generations who gifts, talents and independence were suppressed due to the cultural expecations about their roles. When I started making this film I didn't know much. I knew that what concerned me then was my desire to love and be loved. There was a question about the relationships of the women in my family, my fantastic Mom and aunts, that was keeping me awake. So I turned on the camera, my mother had just come home from work and I asked her about love, about my father, and about life. Suddenly a Pandora's box opened revealing things I may have known but had suppressed. A family that is all women, and all miserable, each in their own way. A real fear began to gnaw at me. What if it happens to me too? Bravely, these feisty, smart women agreed for me to dive into the depths of their choices, into the depths of my desire. And without noticing I discovered a great truth about love, about life, about my wonderful family.

Aviya Shaked did two years of military service as a commanding officer of female soldiers. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Hebrew literature from the Hebrew University, Aviya studied four years at the Maaleh film school, where she graduated in 2025.Her sophomore comedy, "Irit Bardugo's Bar Mitzvah," was screened at festivals all over the world. “Kicking the Family Curse” is her graduation documentary.
