In my military service, I was a welfare officer. I remember how I traveled by train to the army with the purple lanyard (lanyard symbolizing the job) and people would ask to take a selfie with me. I was an attraction... because in Israeli army culture welfare officers are usually women. When my friends were combatants, I was the epitome of femininity in the IDF. But I knew that the job was extremely important; for example I helped soldiers from the ultra-Orthodox sector who were thrown out of their homes for doing military service. I had many other challenging experiences, many of which made me think - What is masculinity? What is strength?
